Diabetic Diet Plan

Learning you have diabetes and have to be on a diabetic diet plan doesn’t have to be the end of the world for you or your family. Although a diabetic diet plan may be slightly different from what you’re used to, you may discover that it’s not a lot different from what you were eating before your diagnosis. At the very least, I think you’ll discover that it’s very similar to the type of diet that most of us should be on for healthy living anyways.

With the availability of so many processed foods and fast food restaurants, we, as a society, have developed eating habits that can contribute to many health problems. It isn’t until we’re diagnosed with a disorder and have to watch our diet that we actually realize how unhealthy we’ve been eating. This is usually the case when an individual is diagnosed with diabetes and told they need to start on a diabetic diet plan.

A diabetic diet plan does not have to be something you dread, filled with horrible tasting foods. In fact, with a little research, some imagination and a visit with a nutritionist, you may find that your new diet is one that you’ll not only enjoy but will have little trouble following. One of the most important things for diabetics is to eat a healthy diet to help control their glucose level. Improved glycemic levels will lessen the chance of developing, eye, nerve or kidney diseases.

The best way to keep your glucose at healthy levels is to get plenty of exercise and eat a diet with a balanced amount of low and high glycemic index foods. While low glycemic foods will provide a smaller increase in blood sugar, improve your sensitivity to insulin and lower your blood lipids, high glycemic foods will re-fuel your carbs after exercising. Keeping your glycemic level balanced is an important part of a diet for diabetics.

Another important part of a diabetic diet plan is to eat foods that will keep your cholesterol and lipid levels at good numbers. This will help reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems. A low-cholesterol, low-fat diet, along with regular exercise will prove very beneficial. On the subject of cholesterol’s; however, it’s important to realize that not all cholesterol’s is “bad” cholesterol. Certain types of cholesterol, known as HDL, are good cholesterol that we should make sure we include in our diet.

What diabetics eat is very important for maintaining good health. However, as your doctor may have already told you, other factors play an important part in your overall good health. One of these factors is the importance of being consistent. Eating at the same time each day is very important, as is exercising and taking your meds at the same time each day.

A nutritionist will help you determine how many calories you need each day based on your weight, age, type of diabetes and exercise level. Once these factors are determined, you’ll be able to implement a healthy and tasty diabetic diet plan, which will include the right amounts of fruits, vegetables, starches, meat, milk, yogurts, etc.
